The 2008 European Championships co-hosted by Switzerland/Austria has a special meaning for Germany. It was after all the Swiss who Germany first played in 1908. It was the Swiss FA who championed Germany’s re-entry into FIFA after the war, and it was arguably the 1954 World Cup (in Switzerland) where the young Federal Republic was born in the hearts and minds of its citizens.

German football has come a long way since then with the ups and downs to fill several novels. Yet in 1998, when Germany crashed out to Croatia 0-3, the story seemed to be all over. The defeat that day in Lyon was deserved, but as the years passed disappointment (2000) followed disappointment (2004). The luck of Germany and brilliance of Oliver Kahn in Korea/Japan 2002 non-withstanding, Germany seemed consigned to the role of a former football power.

Thus, it was to everyone’s surprise that Jürgen Klinsmann and his team performed an international sporting and political coup in the summer of 2006. The success of his team and the hosting of an excellent World Cup had brought the international perception of Germany and German football from a dissonant field-gray to a vibrant and (in the words of Tony Blair “more fairer image”) of black-red-gold. Indeed, Germans themselves for the first time in half-a-century were unabashedly proud of their new united nation. They could fly the flag again, and it belonged to everyone again.

All through the Euro’s, “Schweini” hasn’t exactly played class football. In fact, you could argue that he hasn’t played well in some time. Yet, when Germany took to the pitch against Portugal, he seemed to play with style and flair.

This was a game after which you could roll out the clichés about how you should never write off the Germans. The turnaround still came as a surprise to me though. I wonder what triggered it? Maybe Löw’s suspension worked as a little extra motivator

Kudos to Austria for a spirited and aggressive performance and thanks for not having a decent finisher - not that we have anything to brag about here either.

Marko Marin, Patrick Helmes and Jermaine Jones

Helmes, Jones and Marin were the players with the least experience in the national team, and this could be one of the main reasons for their dismissal. There would be little to argue about it, if it wasn’t for some of the players Löw chose to keep. There is an overall mediocre player who has not much more than his speedy feet, who once again will appear in a major tournament. Just to name one

I actually repeated that in my head a few times. And almost burst out laughing. If this continues throughout the tournament, I won’t be surprised.

I would excuse low about Marin.. but not about exclude Helmes and leave Oliver Neuville there.
Let me ask u something guys.. what have Oliver Neuville done for the National team ? .. in my openion NONE.. he should have let Helmes play.. much better than Oliver Neuville, he is old and he is not that special player.. im a little sad.. i wanted to see Marin and Helmes playing.

Oliver Neuville scored the goal that got Germany back into the game today, scored the last gasp winner against Paraguay in the 2002 World-Cup Second Round, scored the winner against Poland in the 2006 World Cup group phase. Now what has Helmes done? Though they should have probably kept Helmes or Marin instead of Kuryani, who today again demonstrated he is the new Carsten Jancker.

Italia and Espana These two European powerhouses met not too long ago. We lost 1 zilch on beautiful goal from David Villa. Ironically, that goal came off a rare defensive error from Capitano Cannavaro. Looking back at the highlights, Italy looked livelier in this one. Spain didn’t dominate at all and Mauro Camoranesi was an all around pest. Of course, it just wouldn’t be a proper Italy game if Luca Toni doesn’t get a goal denied for nothing.
